KonMari Tidying

“The approach is rooted in a single question: Does this item spark joy? Identifying what sparks joy leads to a tidy home filled only with items you cherish. It’s also a path to self-discovery, mindful living and fulfillment.”

— MARIE KONDO

The KonMari Method of decluttering

  • a revolutionary system of simplifying your home

  • by discarding physical items that do not bring you joy, you can surround yourself in a relaxing and joyful environment

Background of Marie Kondo

- 2011 publication of “The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up” landed on the New York Times best-seller list after its 2014 publication in English

- January’s debut of her binge-worthy Netflix hit—“Tidying Up with Marie Kondo”

  • help people bring order to their homes and, ultimately, their lives and mental health.

Major concepts of the method

- tidy everywhere (the entire house) all at once rather than tidying a small bit at a time

- tidy by category (for example clothes or books) not by location

- keep objects that “spark joy” in you when you handle them

- if that object doesn’t spark joy, the person should thank it for serving a purpose and then let it go—either to a donation pile or the trash.

Benefits of having clarity in the physical environment to our mental health

- it brings peace, mindfulness, and encourages people to live in the present rather than the past.

- less stress to locate things easily

- Energy levels are increased when clutter is eliminated.

- A sense of accomplishment

Requires strong commitment

The KonMari method is rigorous, and requires commitment, time and energy to complete to its fullest

  • Failing the task may lead to unhealthy self-blame
